First semester is over!

Oh no! Solo/Ensemble tomorrow and I don’t even know where the heck Bellingham High School is! I’ll have to check Mapquest soon. The Internet is a marvelous thing. Did I just say marvelous? Wow.

So I got out of presenting in ContempLit. Yay! In all my years of high school, and even 8th grade, when I’ve had a major presentation at the end of the year (or semester for a half year class), I’ve miraculously avoided giving it. I don’t stall (well, not exactly), we just happen to run out of time. Oh well, I actually regret not giving it. It would have been better than most I saw…

Three day weekend up ahead. The first semester is FINALLY over! No more 20th Century. No more ContempLit. Instead, I’m trading off for Research Writing and Comparative Religions. Can’t say either are much better, but at least it’ll be a change.

In other news, I joined another Star Trek RPG and am planning to join another. The one I just recently joined is the USS Cherokee, part of Star Trek PBEM Network’s Task Force 11. The character? Captain Lance Chisholm, Marine detachment commander. Ironically, I’ll be using this same character for the Bravo Fleet RPG I’ll soon be joining. So I guess this means congrats to Ian for finally getting his command, the USS Explorer, first ship of her class. Lance Chisholm will be Marine CO there as well. I look forward to RPing with you as my fearless leader, Ian.

Now, I be off to drink and be merry.

Because Lord Cody says so…

Lord Cody hath deigned to change his Xanga color scheme. ‘Tis miraculous, yes? ANYWAYS, lapsed into strange archaic there. Well, I decided that the red and blue looked too Superman-ish (okay, okay, I got a complaint about the colors), so I switched to some strange grayish thing. I think it looks cool. Sort of, “I’m too cool for real colors.” Whatever the case, Solo/Ensemble Contest is coming up soon. The quartet I’m in has only practiced together twice, but we sound fairly good. I hope to get together tomorrow after school to practice one last time before the big day. Thank God I’m not doing a duet with SaraBeth this year! Or even a solo. I’d be hard-pressed to find a competent accompanist if I did a solo. But now, duty calls me to drink Mountain Dew and waste myself away in front of the computer. Wait, I already am! Curse you YouthNOISE! You’re polluting my youth by making me stay online 24/7! But I like it…

Thoughts on religion

Argh! I hate AP Chemistry and all things related to it! Why must the hard tests come right before the end of the semester? Why?!

So, I recently found out that one of my friends is a Wicca. Wicca, witch, pagan, whatever you’ve heard it called, this friend is it. This got me on a big theology kick with my parents after I told them about this friend. I don’t exactly know how it all started with the discussions about God and all that, but I got to thinking about religion in general. I’ve taken a few classes on the major religions and I’m gonna take Comparative Religions next semester at school. People laugh at me for this. No clue why.

What I found is that every major (and most minor) religions on Earth have three things in common: be good to yourself, be good to others, and make the world a nicer place. Sure, this sounds like the basic tenets of Christianity, but it’s also the basis for Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Wicca, among others. I’ve deduced that there is one “god”, if you will that speaks to all of us. How we interpret this god’s words are up to our culture.

Christians believe that God sent his only son, Jesus, to save us all. Jesus preached peaceful resistance to aggressiveness. Don’t hurt other people, give your life to helping others, do unto others as you’d have them do unto you, etc.

The Jews believe that the savior hasn’t come yet, but he will. The Ten Commandments given by God to Moses (Christians also have these) say: do not kill, use God’s name in vain, ignore God, disrespect ones parents, murder, commit adultery, steal, give false testimony, or covet anything of one’s neighbor. In essence, they say to be good.

In Islam, the savior was Mohammed, who came after Jesus (who, in the Muslims’ eyes, was just another prophet). He also told people to avoid killing, stealing, etc.

For Buddhism, the big guy is the Buddha, not really a god, but still the founder of a religion. He was big on pacifism.

Hinduism has the whole karma and reincarnation thing. Basically, it forces you to do good. If you do something bad, you receive bad karma. Do something nice, you get good karma. When you die, it all adds up. If you have more bad than good, in your next life, you’ll be born into a lower caste. More good than bad, you’ll be born into a higher caste. Sort of a divine rewards system.

Even Wicca has the same thing going for it. Their Thirteen Goals of a Witch say pretty much the same about being good to yourself and others. Also, they have The Rule of Three, which states that if you use magic to curse or hurt someone else, whatever you did will happen to you, times three. Basically, it’s a warning to not hurt others regardless of what they do to you.

So what happened over time is that as humans spread across the world, their surroundings not only shaped their skin color, language, and culture, it also changed they way they practiced religion. I may be grasping at straws, but it’s the most logical thing I’ve heard regarding religion in a long time.

Out of tune sax

SIX FRICKIN’ INCHES OF SNOW!!!! I’m gonna have to get chains for my car if I want to stay away from the bus. Other than not being able to get out of my driveway very easily, the past few days were fun. If you didn’t already know, I spent Friday and Saturday down in Tacoma at PLU for an honor band. It was fun, but I wish I had done better on the audition. It was a funny thing this year because I didn’t screw up due to nerves like I usually do. Nope, I had practiced the audition piece until I could perform it perfectly. As an added bonus, my tone quality made some of the other clarinetists jealous. That in itself wowed me. But, after a half-hour waiting in line to audition, my reed dried out and I had a weird fuzzy sound. By the time I figured that out, it was too late. So yet again, I got shunted to the worse band and had to sit in front of the SAME STUPID OUT-OF-TUNE ALTO SAXOPHONE PLAYER AS I DID LAST YEAR!!!

Argh. Well, maybe it will snow a lot tomorrow and school will get cancelled. That would be majorly awesome. I shall have to perform my “snow dance” tonight and burn offerings for the snow gods.

First post of the new year

And now for my first post of the new year! Huzzah! So, today I’m driving home from school, when I look out the window and can’t see the road at all. It’s completely and totally white. That’s not the worst part. Coming down my street, I half spin out. I hit a patch of snow and ice on a corner and the car starts sliding. I panic and hit the brakes. Note: do not attempt this at home, it only makes things worse. So there I am sliding out of control towards a telephone pole. Luckily, I stop in time before getting a crumpled fender. I officially hate driving in the snow!! In other news, I’m currently looking out my bedroom window at around 6 inches of snow. It’s about time!

Tomorrow at 5:30 in the morning, I’m going down to Tacoma for the Northwest High Schools Honor Band at Pacific Lutheran University. Hopefully I won’t botch my audition as horribly as last year. I can play the audition piece perfectly alone, but when I go up in front of the people there, I wipe out on the easiest scale. ARGH! It’s the Audition Curse!

I also resigned from Copernicus Station. Nothing was really going on there. Besides, I’m not much of a station person. But I’m going to keep with DS1 because that one looks pretty cool. Also, I applied to be a CO with Bravofleet. Hopefully I’ll get it, but I don’t think I have enough “experience” to satisfy the Admiral Staff. If I do, I’ll let y’all know so you can sign up to be my crew! Ian has already promised to be the Chief Engineer.

Finally, I’ve narrowed down my choice of colleges. Knowing that my major will most likely be astronomy (yes, a surprise choice, but one I’m sure of) I’ve selected University of Washington, The Evergreen State College, and Whitman University as my top three (but not necessarily in that order). So if you want to ensure your success in college, make sure you figure out where I’m going and go there.
