More on why I hate whiners

Don’t you hate it when someone complains about something but doesn’t do anything to fix the situation? Take this small group of freshmen in band at the football game Friday. One is a trumpet (sits right behind me) and the other is a clarinet (right in front of me). The whole time–and I mean the whole time–the two are talking back and forth about how stupid the game is (we won 69-7, so I suppose the futility of it all on the part of the opposing team might have accounted for that), how much they hated band, and how it sucked sitting in the cold playing pep band music for home football games. I was tempted a few times to turn around, smack the trumpet player and tell him to stop bitching about what he can’t change. It bugged me that much.

It’s the assholes–I mean kids–like him and his buddy that make band no fun. All the people who provided all the fun times have graduated, my class has one or two people who measure up to their predecessors, and all the underclassmen–to put it bluntly–suck in many ways. Band is no longer as fun as it was when I was a freshman. Of course, I try to make what I can out of it, but I’m not the type to be, as the drum major my freshman year put it, en-THU-siastic. I mean, I clap along with the cheers, but it’s really, really hard to be engaged in the game when surrounded by whining freshmen and sophomores.

Other than that, things seem to be fine. School is going swimmingly, with the exception of calculus, in which I’ve procrastinated so much with the homework that I’m sure to sink like a rock once the end of the quarter rolls around. I hate busy work. Physics is exactly the opposite. It may be challenging, but I understand it and can actually do the problems (mostly because the book explains it). Nothing to report on the rest of my classes.

Now, to finish working on my UW application…

Never Forget

Tears 9-11-01

I will never forget. 9/11/01

Can it get any smaller?

No more iPod Mini. It’s been replaced by the iPod nano, which is smaller and more expensive. Doesn’t life just suck sometimes? I had been planning on getting a 4GB Mini, which would have cost roughly two hundred smackeroos. Now, if I want to get the same size (4GB) nano, it will cost two hundred and FIFTY. Erg. Smaller isn’t always better…it’s just more expensive and easier to lose. Or break.

Give it a year or so before Apple pulls it because so many people misplace it.

Back to school

School starts on the seventh. Woe is me! I haven’t finished my summer reading yet. David Copperfield, if anyone’s interested. Maybe I’ll go find a Cliff’s Notes somewhere…

In other news, the first football game of the season (high school, that is) was Friday. Pretty fun. I went with my sister and talked with a few friends about whatnot. We won, which was surprising. Maybe we’ll have a good team this year. Burlington-Edison hasn’t won the state championship since 1987, I believe. But we went to state two years back and held our own. I hope this year is the same.

To all who have me on Star Trek simms: I’m sorry if I haven’t posted that much. With school starting in less than three days, I’m a bit swamped. I hope to be back at normal posting levels soon, once things settle down and I don’t have to worry about this stupid summer reading. Gar.

A few days ago I went to the local Bargains Galore and bought Deus Ex: Invisible War for five bucks. I almost felt like I was robbing the nice little old lady behind the counter. However, I found out that my computer doesn’t like Deus Ex. The Eidos tech support guy said it was my soundcard (of all things), so my dad went out and bought me a new one at Office Max (not quite the one I wanted, but pretty much the same), but the game is still being annoying. I know it’s not the game (looks as good as new), so it means that my computer is at fault. Probably the video card. That video card has a pretty poor track record. But I don’t have the $200 to get a new (good) one, so here I am, stuck playing Deus Ex and having it freeze on me every five minutes for no apparent reason.

Sometimes I wonder if the computer gods hate me.
