Three items worthy of talk today. The first is that the lives of elementary kids everywhere have been changed forever by the announcement that Pluto…is no longer a planet. That’s right, the ninth planet of this solar system is something else entirely, which leaves us with only eight planets. Pluto, along with the asteroid Ceres and recently discovered 2003 UB313 (codename: Xena), is now considered a “dwarf planet,” which makes no sense. A cell phone is still a phone, people.

Anyways, enough about the god of the underworld. At the risk of sounding overly self-centered (hey, this a blog after all), I went whale-watching today. For the second time this month. We didn’t see any whales the first time, so we (mean Lindsay and I) got to go again for free. This time we hit the jackpot by coming across all three local orca whale pods (J, K, and L) as well as a plethora of transient orcas from up north, all in the same general area (somewhere off the coast of Vancouver Island, near Victoria). Once I get the pictures from Lindsay, I’ll be sure to post the good ones. It was a blast. There were so many whales, you’d be sure to see a breach no matter which way you were looking. And of course, I didn’t get pictures of any of them. I just have a bunch of splashes. Curse you, non-still life!

We got back to the marina in Anacortes around nine, after an amazing sunset (at least it didn’t move too fast for the camera), and I came home to find the third newsworthy thing of today: a new kitten. I walked in and found my parents and Chelsea (my sister) sitting in the living room, so I told them about the whales, and after about ten minutes, I look to where Chelsea is and see a little bed with a black and white something in it. At first, I thought it was our dog Button, who’s also black and white. Then I noticed it was a cat. So I wondered what a toy cat was doing in Button’s dog bed. Then it meowed, which took me slightly by surprise (I was tired, so not much could freak me out). Turns out, a friend of Callie (my other sister) had a bunch of cats she needed to get rid of, so Callie persuaded my mom to take one, a black and white female. Completely free. We’re not sure how old she is, but we think she’s seven or eight weeks. She’s seriously the funniest cat alive. They named her Zoe (or Zoey, or Zoë; I’m not sure), after contemplating Oreo, Smudge, and a whole host of other strange names Callie came up with.

The cat was nearly asleep when I got home, but she managed to get a full half-hour’s worth of manic jumping around, batting at fans, chair legs, and bathroom mats before I decided to call it a night. Heh, I’ve never laughed so much with another cat. They’re just hilarious, especially when they’re kittens and spaz out at nothing at all. Fun times…it was a cool day, to say the least.

I’ll get pictures of whale-watching and the cat up when I get them.
