So, over the course of the past few days, I’ve been slowly watching my laptop’s AC adapter slowly wasting away, starting with a split in the plastic coating of a wire sometime last week and ending today with a bit of flame and a lot of smoke. At work. In a room full of people. Amazingly, no one actually saw my power supply writhing in its death throes, but almost everyone smelled the smoke. Luckily, I was able to unplug it before things got too out of hand, but not before leaving a nice little scorch mark on the desk.
This is, of course, very annoying. My laptop has only about 2 or 2.5 hours of battery life (if that), and without a power supply, I have no way to recharge. But I am not completely without foresight. As soon as I noticed the adapter really start to go south (about yesterday), I ordered a replacement part, which was just shipped out early this morning. It should get here, hopefully, later this week. Until then…well, I’ll just have to avoid using my laptop as much as I can to avoid running it down completely. Either that or risk it with the power supply, which, considering today’s events, I’d really rather not do.
The Aftermath
So, I decided to take some pictures of the ruined adapter, just to show how bad the thing got fried. My nose suffered a lot to bring you these photos…
Sphere: Related ContentWell, I’ve finally gotten my blog situation all ironed out. I don’t know what kept going wrong with my old host, but things over here at BlueHost are working much, much better. Anyways, I apologize for any growing pains any of you may be experiencing, after coming across some other site where this blog used to be. I assure you, I’m here to stay for the long run (provided I keep a steady source of income to pay for the hosting).
What’s in store for the future? Same old, same old, really. I’ll keep ranting about silly people and posting (semi) useful information for those who care to read it. However, there is one addition I hope to make, and that is WordPress themes. I’ve been honing my PHP skills by converting old HTML templates into WordPress themes. Those, and hopefully others, will be forthcoming soon.
Sphere: Related ContentPardon the drastic changes. I’ve been having major problems with WordPress recently, so I decided to wipe the slate clean and start fresh. Unfortunately, that backfired on me and nothing worked. Luckily I had backups, but now I’m back at square one, still suffering from problems with themes, the rich-text editor, and permissions. I’m thinking a lot of these are problems with my host, since WP installations on other hosts work perfectly fine.
So, here’s what’s going down: Mad Rants (my personal blog, the one you’re looking at) is going to move over to codylogan.net, formerly a web template store of mine which tanked horribly. Turns out I’m better at writing blogs than I am at designing and coding templates. Anyways, this site (mroarg.lp.tl) will become…something else. I haven’t really decided, but I know it’s going to be a special-interest blog of some sort. Probably tech news because I’m good at that. Anyways, there will be a link pointing to the new home of Mad Rants.
mroarg.lp.tl -> tech blog or something
codylogan.net -> Mad Rants (personal blog)
There are a number of reasons for this, the main one being that this host, while very nice for a free one, has a lot of security issues. No, no hackers. Ironically, the host is too secure, which really messes with WordPress. Anyways, these changes will come over the next few days, so stay tuned.
Sphere: Related ContentI know, I know, everyone’s taking a look at Vista and blogging about it. Heck, I don’t even own it yet; I’m just mucking about on a computer with Vista Enterprise they’re testing out where I work. But still, this is one nice version of Windows. I haven’t yet come across anything I don’t like (other than the annoying security pop-ups whenever I try to do certain things because I’m not an admin), but there is one thing in particular that simply amazed me: the Snipping Tool.
Now, this tool was originally introduced for Windows XP Tablet Edition in 2005, but since few people have Tablet PCs, few people know about the tool. Currently, it’s included in four versions of Vista: Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate. So what is the Snipping Tool? It’s a screenshot tool, but with the added capability of only capturing what you select. So, instead of pressing the Print Screen key and cropping the screenshot to show what you want, you can simply use the Snipping Tool to select just what you want to show (freeform, square, even entire windows!), which the tool automatically loads so you can make any handy edits with its built in pen tool. The tool can then save the screenshot as an image (GIF, PNG, or JPG) or as an HTML file.
You can seriously have a lot of fun with this tool, and it saves a lot of time if you use screenshots for tutorials or whatnot. This one tool alone may not be enough to make people switch to Vista, but it’s a pretty nice bonus for those who do.
