Let’s just go with “I hate school”

I still hate poetry. Maybe it’s because my analytical mind can’t comprehend most of the creative elements used in poetic phrasing. Or maybe it’s because I have a four-page paper on a poem due tomorrow, and I’m only through the first page. Yeah, maybe that’s it…

In other news, I had a excellent four-day weekend, which, of course, made it all the worse to have to come back to school and get a slight scare about not having enough PE credits to graduate. Luckily, I found out that was a false alarm, but I still have to do spring marching band in order to get the credit. I hope the freshmen aren’t as stupid as they were last year…

I also hate physics. And calculus. And Washington State history. Physics is really hard and barely understandable (which bugs me to no end considering I’ve never had this much trouble comprehending anything). Calculus has an insane workload (think thirty not-so-easy problems a night almost every night). And finally, Washington State history is just an idiotic graduation requirement that’s vastly harder than the version my peers had to take in eighth grade, when I was busy taking Texas State history. Life is unfair, and there’s not a damn thing I can do about it. Gar.

So here I am, two paragraphs done in my essay, and I don’t know what else to say. I’m not a big fan of poetry, if you haven’t noticed. I simply don’t understand why I need to write four pages analyzing it. I understand the poem fine. It’s about a guy and his lover with the guy saying all this flowery stuff to the sun about how it was intruding upon their world, blah blah blah, yada yada, and all that jazz. It’s a good poem, but I just can’t seem to figure out what my English teacher wants me to write about. There’s a limit to how much one can BS an essay. It’s about a page and a half. After that, it becomes obvious you don’t know what you’re talking about, and the grade drops exponentially in relation to the amount of paper you’ve wasted saying nothing important.

I know from experience.

It just turned eleven, which means I should get things in gear and crank out a semblance of a well-made essay, even if I don’t do any pre-writing (a quarter of the essay grade, unfortunately, but totally pointless) and the final ends up being three pages. I don’t care (enough) any more to worry about getting a 75% on an English paper. It’s about par for the course these days, meaning both the grade and the pointlessness of the essay. I’d rant about the time we had to write an essay literally about nothing, but that’d take too long, and I really need to finish this essay so I can sleep and try to forget all the physics homework I didn’t do because of the essay. (Of course I didn’t procrastinate! Well, not really. Kind of. Perhaps a bit. Okay, I could have made my life easier by doing the essay over the weekend, but where’s the fun in that? I wouldn’t be able to complain. Meh.)

The Democratic States of Free Askar is a tiny, socially progressive nation, notable for its burgeoning askarian eagle population. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 5 million have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

The large government juggles the competing demands of Healthcare, Social Welfare, and Law & Order. The average income tax rate is 23%. A large private sector is led by the Cheese Exports industry, followed by Woodchip Exports and Door-to-door Insurance Sales.

Crime is a problem. Free Askar’s national animal is the askarian eagle and its currency is the askot.

Ian got me hooked. I don’t like the bit about the cheese, but there’s not much I can do about that. Meh.

I got back from PLU yesterday. It was all right. I was planning to rant on how I’m doomed to mediocrity because I’m not some rich snob who can drop a few thousand dollars on quality equipment, but I realized that would be whining, and I’m not much of a whiner. But I have decided I’m not continuing on with concert performance in college. No more clarinet for me, until I’m filthy rich and can afford a really good one. Instead, I’ll concentrate more on marching band. I think I’d have a lot of fun playing at football games and doing field shows. Yeah.

I also got new glasses. They’re snazzy.

Talk to my agent

Hmm, I can’t seem to use the rich text editing box. Probably a problem with Firefox, but I just can’t figure it out…oh well.

I’m off to PLU tomorrow for a glorious two-day adventure in playing music I’ve probably never seen before! And I’m still rusty on my audition materials! Big surprise there. Anyways, I’ll be gone all day Friday (we leave at 5:00 in the morning… *groan*) and most of Saturday, so if I don’t return your calls, don’t think I hate you. It’s just that my agent is an anti-social person. Kidding.

So who watched the Rose Bowl? Oh, I don’t care about the game. I just watched it for the USC band. That’s the kind of stuff I want to be doing. I’m serious. I’ve always wanted to dance like Michael Jackson in the middle of a football field. Really.

Week of death and misery and nasty things

This is the week of death and misery and nasty things that hide under your bed. I’ll see if I can summarize it for you:

Today - Bowling at 6:30
Tues - Marching practice 2:30-4; dinner at Grandma’s; youth group at 6:30 (no bowling practice thankfully)
Wed - Basketball game at 6:30
Thurs - Marching practice 2:30-4; bowling practice 4:45-5:45
Fri - Basketball game at 6:30
Sat - Bowling game at 1:20, parade at 3:00

And who knows what else may crop up. I had been planning to take Lindsay bowling or something (heh, as if I need more bowling), but it doesn’t look like I have much free time. I suppose if I really wanted to, I could skip the Friday game…I dunno. This just isn’t a good week to have a social life. But at least I finished my UW application! *dances*

Snail-eating fish

Craft fair tomorrow. And Vet’s day parade. And O’Dea football game. Joy. Rapture. Glee.

You can tell I’m not terribly excited about the whole thing. Of course, I did volunteer to play at the football game, so that bit of pain is totally my fault, but the parade is required (oh please let it rain and thunder and stuff) and my parents are bound to drag me to watch their booth at the fair for no reason at all.

Well, things on the Canuck are going swimmingly. Somehow, my less-than-sterling recruiting efforts have gained me a few new crewmembers, bringing the total ship’s enrollment to 12, including myself. That’s none too shabby. The only problem is, my XO doesn’t post a whole lot (curse you Ian!) and all the new players are…well, newbies. Complete and utter n00bs. One of them has already dropped off the face of the Earth, and I didn’t even get to yell at him for posting wrong. Just kidding. I don’t do that. Except to Ian. *runs away from a certain viola-wielding Trekker*

On the home front, my Internet is being naughty again, possibly due to this nice little rainstorm that’s moved in and covers all of the Pacific Northwest. It wouldn’t be so bad if we didn’t rely on satellite for our entertainment purposes (meaning TV and Internet). I also got a little (well, not that little) snail for my Betta fish’s tank, which was being rampantly overrun by algae until I attacked it with a toothbrush and paper towels. In theory, this snail will eat the algae and keep the tank clean. In practice, it’s just sitting up near the top of the tank doing nothing. At least the fish isn’t trying to eat it, which I’m told can sometimes occur. Of course, sometimes the snail can be the one doing the eating. That’s usually a disturbing sight to watch.

I’m experimenting with various website templates in the hopes that I’ll finally get my personal website up. Unfortunately, the majority of them require editing of various PSD files for customization, and my copy of CS2 is being really, really slow. Seriously, I don’t know what’s up. I even stole–I mean scavenged–an extra 256 meg memory chip from another computer in the house to see if it made any difference. It didn’t. So here I am, 768 megs of RAM, and my computer still hates Photoshop. Figures.

Oh, and I also went over to Lindsay’s house today to watch Mask of Zorro. Of course, we talked more than we watched, but I suppose that’s a fair trade-off. One funny incident: Lindsay was telling me how in Drama, she was talking to my sister Chelsea, when Chelsea found out I was coming to the closing night of Charley’s Aunt. Chelsea said, in typical sisterly fashion, “Oh, Cody will do anything for you, Lindsay.” Funny thing is, that’s not too far from the truth.

Now that I’ve emptied my brain into this post, I bid you good luck, and good night.
