Curse you Dell!

I swear, I have the most incompatible laptop ever. For some strange and inexplicable reason, my (not-so) unique combination of hardware makes it a very big pain to install anything other than Windows on my computer. Linux? Doesn’t like my video card or my wireless. Mac OS X (not that I’d ever try to install a hacked version of OS X on my computer)? Doesn’t like my video card, my sound, and my ethernet connection. Heck, even in Windows, nothing likes my video card. Damn Radeon Mobility. ATI refuses to provide support for my model, so I have to rely on Dell to provide timely driver updates…which they don’t.

I honestly don’t know why this laptop in particular is such a pain. I mean, it was only one of the most popular Inspiron laptop models Dell put out before the newest wave. I still think you can get it through their business store under the guise of 6400 (the home version was labeled E1505). The graphics card is all right, but it’s been the biggest thorn in my side when trying to install a) Windows games, or b) non-Windows operating systems. Ubuntu Linux was my arch-nemesis for a while, until I found out some guy actually modified an Ubuntu installation CD to work specifically on Dell E1505 systems with no tweaking or special knowledge of terminal commands required (the custom CD/DVD for the latest release of Ubuntu, 7.10, is still in beta, but the old disks for 7.04 are still perfectly workable). He’s got the right idea. Other developers don’t.

The thing is that people don’t make concessions for hardware like mine. The majority of hardware configurations work so they don’t take the time to fix things up for the small amount of incompatible configurations. It just bugs me that an entire laptop line gets thrown out the window for this. Okay, that’s not completely true. The big problems only show up if you have an ATI Radeon Mobility x1400 video card. I don’t know what it is about this particular card, but it can cause you major grief if you like Linux, hacked Mac OS X, or newer games. The most recent problem I encountered came when I tried playing Gears of War. I figured I’d be able to enjoy it at fairly low graphics settings, but the game crashed my computer when it started because I didn’t have the latest version of the Catalyst drivers for my card. This would be no problem…if Dell had released those drivers. ATI won’t give them to me (my hardware configuration, again, is incompatible, and they’re unwilling to develop alternate drivers for Dell systems). I had to fall back on third-party drivers, and I haven’t had the chance to test them out yet.

Some people tell me I shouldn’t be gaming on a laptop unless I shell out thousands of dollars for an Alienware or Dell XPS notebook. Others tell me I should just buy a desktop rig and trick it out. That would be nice, yes, and I intend on putting together a desktop gaming PC in the future, but for the time being, I have to make do with what I have. And I’m entitled to whine about it because I’m a poor, starving college student who knows better than to whip out the credit card and act like I don’t have to pay it off. So there.

Super-secret project

I’ve been working on a secret project on my computer, but I’m not allowed to talk about it. Okay, I suppose I could talk about it, but considering the questionable legality of said project, it’s probably best if I don’t explicitly say what I may or may not be doing. Certain software companies that rhyme with Snapple might not like to hear what I am theoretically doing.

And that…was a completely pointless post. But don’t worry; something will come of this. A tutorial, maybe. Or maybe I’ll accidentally nuke my computer and forget all about it. Then you’ll get to hear me rant. It’s all good, right?

The hard way

I should learn to do backups more often… I finally fixed my computer after having completely wiping it out due to a partitioning operation gone horribly wrong. Funny story, if you have a strange sense of humor. Anyways, whatever I did screwed up my computer so bad that it wouldn’t start up at all. But luckily for me, all my files were still on the hard drive, which meant I didn’t do too bad of a job messing it all up. I still had to copy (almost) all my files off the hard drive, wipe the hard drive clean, yell at the laptop for not letting me boot off a CD, somehow manage to figure out how to boot from the CD-ROM, install Windows, install five billion Windows updates, install five billion programs, and copy all the files back onto the hard drive, only to realize that I forgot to get my fonts off the hard drive before I wiped it, which leaves me with all the uncool Windows base fonts and none of my uber-cool designer fonts that I used to make my websites look nice. But at least I saved everything else. I hope. I suppose I’ll find out sooner or later…

But now I’m back up and running, better than before, actually. It’s nice to start all over every once in a while to get rid of all the junk that builds up on your computer. But it’s a real bugger to go through. If this has taught me anything, it’s to not mess around with partitions and back up far more often than I used to.

So that’s what I’ve been up to for the past three days. Fun times, eh? I’m sure I just bored everyone to tears. I’m sorry that my life isn’t more exciting. I try, I really do. Maybe sometime soon I’ll tell you all about my gallivanting around the countryside in my Geo. Even better, right? I’d rant about something, but I’m too tired, and I’m not about to share the intimate details of my relationship with Lindsay, either. My parents read this. Savvy?

Laptop killer

I killed my laptop. It made me sad. Now I have to copy everything off the hard drive, reformat the hard drive, reinstall Windows, and copy almost everything back on to the hard drive. All because I didn’t do my backups like a good boy. Let this be a lesson to everyone out there: remember to back up your computers. Do it. Now.

Well, yesterday was just an average day, but with more food involved. That’s how the Fourth of July generally is for me. Nobody will let me near the fireworks. I can’t imagine why…

So, since my computer is effectively useless until I can fix everything, I’m forced to finish graduation thank you letters (yeah, I’m a bit behind on those, I know), clean up my room (it would be nice to actually see the floor, I suppose), and always keep an eye on the computer transferring all my files to make sure it doesn’t mysteriously stop copying for an hour or two and waste all my time. Argh. Did I mention how I don’t like technology sometimes?

Damn you Chaintech!

My computer seriously hates me. First off, my video card died (crappy Chaintech support is partially to blame), so I’m being forced to use an ancient NVIDIA TNT2 card (it’s almost seven years old, people) just so I can use the computer. On the plus side, it’s a better card than the piece-of-crap ATI Rage Pro card that I could have used. On the down side, I can’t use Photoshop because my video card is too slow, meaning I’m going to fall way behind on the logo project for Digital Imaging, which should have been finished Wednesday. On the Internet side of things, Firefox won’t show half my bookmarks and it’s having problems following links when I click on them, Internet Explorer just plain sucks, and the fresh copy of the Opera browser I just downloaded doesn’t like MySpace.

Anyways, I found an old Texas pal on MySpace, Stephen Reilly. He moved up to New Jersey right after 8th grade and I thought I’d never see him again. So, a few days ago, I was searching for junior high friends on MySpace and, lo and behold, his name popped up. It was pretty cool.
