Get a Mac…why?

I used to like the Mac vs. PC ads on TV. They were funny at first. Now they just seem kind of…mean. Upgrade nightmares? Too many versions of Vista? Those are pretty low blows if you think about it.

For one thing, upgrading to any new operating system is painful. Newer OS’s require newer hardware. That’s a fact of life. I mean, it was the same way going from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X. There are still many Mac users with OS 9 who couldn’t afford to upgrade to OS X due to–gasp!–hardware limitations. The funny thing is that if you lack the hardware necessary for Vista, you can simply buy new components and upgrade your existing PC. Can’t do that with a Mac. You’d have to buy a whole new one, and Macs aren’t exactly cheap.

The other bit about multiple versions of Vista is also kind of silly. The commercial for that one claims that Mac just has one version with everything. Windows does too: it’s called Ultimate. Of course, an upgrade version of Ultimate costs about $259 to the $129 OS X upgrade, which is quite a difference, but when you consider that you can install Vista Ultimate on any type of computer you want that has the hardware support (as opposed to OS X, which you can only install on those expensive Macs), as well as the extra features Ultimate packs (such as BitLocker hard drive encryption), I think it’s worth the extra cost.

Don’t get me wrong, Macs are good computers. But you can’t really compare them to PCs like Apple does. I could probably tear apart their points pretty easily, but that would be petty and I don’t want to waste my time. I’ll just suffice to say that my PC “just works” fine as it is. And it plays games. No such thing as a Mac gamer, is there? I rest my case.

Fond memories

All my senior friends are graduating. It majorly bummed me out today when I went to lunch and there was my table…empty. Oh sure, there are a couple sophomores and a freshman who usually sit there, too, but all the seniors were gone. I was struck by a massive sense of nostalgia. All the good memories. All the funny jokes. The banana on the roof, the spoon fights, the cram sessions for math and/or Vietnam…I ended up sitting somewhere else so I wouldn’t be overwhelmed by sadness at the sight of empty seats. Plus empty tables remind me of my freshman year. Not a pleasant thing to be remembering.

Today was officially their last day. There was this big assembly (that I got to skip because the band takes that time to practice for our graduation performance) and then the seniors went around to all their classes and got signed out so they could leave. Graduation is Friday. I have no doubt that I’ll get a little misty-eyed knowing I won’t be seeing the great majority of the seniors again. At least not every day. But on the bright side, I get to go to a graduation party on the 18th and they’ll probably all be there. That should be a fun party. Even if I’ll be dead tired because of an all-night lock-in the night before. Yeah. It’ll be even cooler if we play spoons with me in that condition. But I doubt I’ll be that tired. I mean, how bad can a lock-in with a bunch of hyper teenagers be? <–*famous last words*

You know you have too much country music on your computer when your “random” playlist of rock/jazz/ska/metal/country/pop music plays ten country songs in a row. I still can’t believe it did that. I didn’t think there was that much country on there. I mean, the list is four and a half hours long. How much country can there possibly be on there to play ten in a row? My computer has problems like that.

I also found out about another free webmail service, open to people who use AIM. I rarely do use it, but I have a screen name, so that was how I got in. Apparently Gmail made a big impression because AIM Mail gives you 2 GB free. Twice as much as Gmail (although Gmail is constantly increasing, I’ve had Gmail long enough to have 2 GB on it). I don’t foresee myself ever using AIM Mail, but it’s nice to have a mail service to use when I sign up for things so it gets all the spam. Like my Yahoo mail account…and my Mail.com account…and to a lesser extent my Hotmail account. But I get a lot of legit mail in Hotmail. But by far I also get the most “F.R.EE C.IA.LIS T.AB.S” and “M AK E H E R HA P PY” spam. I swear…

Those Raiders will learn…

Das Boot turned out to be a great movie, although the ending was really sad. But I won’t tell about it so all you people who haven’t seen it won’t know the ending. Another bummer: my new car stereo doesn’t work. Major bummer. Although, my uncle tried it out on his car and it worked. So maybe it’s just something we did wrong in hooking it up. Strange. Well, we’ll get it working eventually. Other than that, today was a great day. Got to stay home alone, watch TV, try to do the practice PSAT I have, etc. Next week’s going to be packed. I have a couple after school drama things, as well as a Key Club meeting on Monday, and a bunch of other things I can’t think of off the top of my head. And the week after that I have some more drama things (and a dinner play) and the PSAT. Fun. Well, now I’m depressed about Das Boot. Oh well. Fun times. Yeah. I’m kinda bored. I’m so bored I don’t even have anything pointless to ramble about. Guess I’ll just play the computer. Hehe, those Raiders will learn to fear Cody and the Broncos…
