Snail-eating fish

Craft fair tomorrow. And Vet’s day parade. And O’Dea football game. Joy. Rapture. Glee.

You can tell I’m not terribly excited about the whole thing. Of course, I did volunteer to play at the football game, so that bit of pain is totally my fault, but the parade is required (oh please let it rain and thunder and stuff) and my parents are bound to drag me to watch their booth at the fair for no reason at all.

Well, things on the Canuck are going swimmingly. Somehow, my less-than-sterling recruiting efforts have gained me a few new crewmembers, bringing the total ship’s enrollment to 12, including myself. That’s none too shabby. The only problem is, my XO doesn’t post a whole lot (curse you Ian!) and all the new players are…well, newbies. Complete and utter n00bs. One of them has already dropped off the face of the Earth, and I didn’t even get to yell at him for posting wrong. Just kidding. I don’t do that. Except to Ian. *runs away from a certain viola-wielding Trekker*

On the home front, my Internet is being naughty again, possibly due to this nice little rainstorm that’s moved in and covers all of the Pacific Northwest. It wouldn’t be so bad if we didn’t rely on satellite for our entertainment purposes (meaning TV and Internet). I also got a little (well, not that little) snail for my Betta fish’s tank, which was being rampantly overrun by algae until I attacked it with a toothbrush and paper towels. In theory, this snail will eat the algae and keep the tank clean. In practice, it’s just sitting up near the top of the tank doing nothing. At least the fish isn’t trying to eat it, which I’m told can sometimes occur. Of course, sometimes the snail can be the one doing the eating. That’s usually a disturbing sight to watch.

I’m experimenting with various website templates in the hopes that I’ll finally get my personal website up. Unfortunately, the majority of them require editing of various PSD files for customization, and my copy of CS2 is being really, really slow. Seriously, I don’t know what’s up. I even stole–I mean scavenged–an extra 256 meg memory chip from another computer in the house to see if it made any difference. It didn’t. So here I am, 768 megs of RAM, and my computer still hates Photoshop. Figures.

Oh, and I also went over to Lindsay’s house today to watch Mask of Zorro. Of course, we talked more than we watched, but I suppose that’s a fair trade-off. One funny incident: Lindsay was telling me how in Drama, she was talking to my sister Chelsea, when Chelsea found out I was coming to the closing night of Charley’s Aunt. Chelsea said, in typical sisterly fashion, “Oh, Cody will do anything for you, Lindsay.” Funny thing is, that’s not too far from the truth.

Now that I’ve emptied my brain into this post, I bid you good luck, and good night.

Chopstick instructions

I find this wildly amusing. Courtesy of thisisbroken.com, which in turn filched it (okay, they borrowed it) from Gourmand’s Demands.

In other news, Spring Break was fun, but depressing (because it was only a finite amount of time). I am now back working my arse off in school. In other words, I’m sitting on my bum writing this blog when I should be doing AP Chem and math. Fun, eh?

Fish update: he hasn’t died…yet. Unlike my last Betta, this one has stayed alive for longer than a month. I swear, that last one was just a bad egg. A suicidal egg, I should say.

Have I advertised my ship yet? Of course I have. But I’ll do it again! Visit my site. If you like what you see (and I hope you do, I sat on my butt for long hours making that site), go ahead and fill out the form to join. It’s fairly simple, especially if you’ve had experience with this type of thing before. If not, I’ll just teach you. It’s not that hard. Also, I believe last time I did a shameless plug for my ship, I told you the site was http://home.earthlink.net/~clpo13/usscanuck. Well, that’s no longer true. I got a BravoHost account (which, let me tell you, is way better than the free space I had with Earthlink), so the site is now http://usscanuck.bravohost.org. I edited most of the pictures myself. Thank God for PhotoImpact!

SETI@home

So, a day hath passed and my fish hasn’t shown any odd behavior (such as not eating, like the last one). He’s doing good, apparently. Three cheers for water conditioning tablets!

I finally got SETI@home to work. Go me. So far my first work unit is at 52.386% done. And that was after 5 hours and 23 minutes! I encourage you to download SETI@home. Well, only if you have a fast computer. It takes up a lot of CPU power.

I’d better study for my German test tomorrow…or not.

Suicidal fish

The funniest thing happened today. I woke up and climbed out of bed. The air pump for my fish tank was being loud, so I went over to whap it (it gets quieter after that). While over there, I notice the distinct absence of my fish in the fish tank. Now, this is without my glasses on. So, I immediately run over and put on my glasses and run back to the tank. Yep, no fish. By now, I’m mildly disturbed. What could have happened? I doubted that he was abducted by little fishy aliens, so the only thing that could have happened was that he jumped out. This is next to nearly impossible because the tank is covered with the only opening being an equilateral triangle with inch-long sides. However, I’d seen him try once before when he was in “freak-out” mode. So I begin searching the floor, after, of course, alerting my parents to the disappearance of a perfectly good fish. My dad eventually finds the poor bugger stuck to the back of a magazine, right in the middle of a splash of milk on a “got milk?” ad. He was very dead by that time, considering he had most likely made his jump in the middle of the night. Well, perhaps a little after, I was still up at midnight.

Whatever the case, I promptly went out and bought another fish, along with bottled water and some water-conditioning tablets. I know people who have had Betta fish for 4 years, so why can’t mine last past a few months? Damn suicidal fish…

Fish troubles

Four day weekendness! Presidents’ Day is one of the best holidays ever conceived by corporate America! Oh wait, that’s Valentine’s Day.

My old Betta fish died recently. It was a quiet death not witnessed by anyone. He didn’t even float belly-up. One day he was swimming happily around and the next, he was lying on his side on the bottom of the tank drowning peacefully. So I got a new one.

Okay, okay, I’m not that cold-hearted. It made me feel bad that the fish died so soon and for no apparent reason. But he had been a good fish. So today, I cleaned out his tank and put in a new Betta fish. It’s hard to get attached to fish.
