Why I hate copy protection

It’s the bane of every consumer: digital copy protection. You find it on games, DVDs, music CDs. It’s everywhere and it’s damned annoying. Sometimes it can be extreme, such as the rootkits installed by some Sony CDs. Sometimes it’s easily broken, such as with HD DVDs. But no matter what, it doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do, which is keep people from pirating copyrighted material. What it does do, on the other hand, is hinder legitimate consumers from being able to fully utilize the very things they paid for.

Argh!

WordPress 2.2 broke my theme. I just upgraded to the newest version and suffered a setback when I found that the theme I was running is slightly incompatible with how WordPress uses widgets. See, if you know much about WordPress blogs, you realize that most themes feature widgets, which are useful little gadgets that you can drag and drop around in your sidebar to change the functionality. A few people (mostly developers of the popular K2 theme and its derivatives) decided to use something different for managing stuff in the sidebar, and they called their stuff modules. So, modules and widgets…the same, but not. The main problem is that the two are utterly incompatible. Enable widgets on your blog and the modules break. I personally like the modules better, but apparently WordPress decided to go with implementing widgets. No surprise there considering the widgets were originally developed by Automattic, the company responsible for bringing WordPress to the masses.

Anyways, the theme I was originally using was Unsleepable, which is based off of K2 and thus uses modules. It’s actually a version that was released a while back and then taken off the developer’s site due to bugs. I managed to fix my copy and it served me well. However, today when I upgraded to WordPress 2.2 from 2.1, I noticed one big problem: all my module configuration was gone, and there was no way to get it back. The little menu tab that let me mess with the theme’s modules wasn’t there at all. There was something new, though: a widgets tab.

In previous versions of WordPress (from about 1.5 to 2.1), you had to install a plugin to enable widget functionality, and that only worked on themes that were widget-ready. As of 2.2, the widget plugin is essentially built right in, which is nice for most people, since most themes use widgets. Since my theme used modules, the widget functionality broke the theme. As far as I can tell, there’s no easy way to disable widgets.

Due to this, I’ve switched to another theme, Redoable. This theme is also based off of K2 and uses modules, but I’ve found that it’s a lot nicer-looking than Unsleepable when I can’t change the modules. The base sidebar stuff is just what I need, and it’s a little newer than the other theme. Hopefully as time goes on, something will be done about the widgets. I’d mess with it myself, but I’ve no clue where to start. As knowledgeable as I am about WordPress, I’m no good at editing PHP to the extent that it would be needed. I’d probably end up screwing up my whole installation, and I personally think a half-working blog is better than a non-working blog.

EDIT: I spoke too soon. Not five minutes after I posted this did I come across a handy little plugin which disables widgets in 2.2. I need to learn to look before I speak. Anyways, with all things put back as they were, I’m back with the Unsleepable theme. I’m tempted to permanently switch to Redoable, but the sidebar modules still aren’t working on that (I’m not sure if they ever were), so it’s the tried and true for now. The pink is starting to get to me, though.

Fiery death

So, over the course of the past few days, I’ve been slowly watching my laptop’s AC adapter slowly wasting away, starting with a split in the plastic coating of a wire sometime last week and ending today with a bit of flame and a lot of smoke. At work. In a room full of people. Amazingly, no one actually saw my power supply writhing in its death throes, but almost everyone smelled the smoke. Luckily, I was able to unplug it before things got too out of hand, but not before leaving a nice little scorch mark on the desk.

This is, of course, very annoying. My laptop has only about 2 or 2.5 hours of battery life (if that), and without a power supply, I have no way to recharge. But I am not completely without foresight. As soon as I noticed the adapter really start to go south (about yesterday), I ordered a replacement part, which was just shipped out early this morning. It should get here, hopefully, later this week. Until then…well, I’ll just have to avoid using my laptop as much as I can to avoid running it down completely. Either that or risk it with the power supply, which, considering today’s events, I’d really rather not do.

The Aftermath

So, I decided to take some pictures of the ruined adapter, just to show how bad the thing got fried. My nose suffered a lot to bring you these photos…

WordPress grief

Pardon the drastic changes. I’ve been having major problems with WordPress recently, so I decided to wipe the slate clean and start fresh. Unfortunately, that backfired on me and nothing worked. Luckily I had backups, but now I’m back at square one, still suffering from problems with themes, the rich-text editor, and permissions. I’m thinking a lot of these are problems with my host, since WP installations on other hosts work perfectly fine.

So, here’s what’s going down: Mad Rants (my personal blog, the one you’re looking at) is going to move over to codylogan.net, formerly a web template store of mine which tanked horribly. Turns out I’m better at writing blogs than I am at designing and coding templates. Anyways, this site (mroarg.lp.tl) will become…something else. I haven’t really decided, but I know it’s going to be a special-interest blog of some sort. Probably tech news because I’m good at that. Anyways, there will be a link pointing to the new home of Mad Rants.

mroarg.lp.tl -> tech blog or something
codylogan.net -> Mad Rants (personal blog)

There are a number of reasons for this, the main one being that this host, while very nice for a free one, has a lot of security issues. No, no hackers. Ironically, the host is too secure, which really messes with WordPress. Anyways, these changes will come over the next few days, so stay tuned.

Vista and gaming

Well, Windows Vista’s release isn’t looking as sunny as everyone was hoping. I have yet to try it out, but I am planning on buying a new laptop in about a month or so that will be preloaded with Home Premium. I was psyched…until I read this.

Apparently, a number of games suffer from major performance hits or simply don’t work under Windows Vista, even though the system is supposed to be backwards compatible with DirectX 9 games. I’ve looked into it, and one game I was particularly looking forward to finally being able to play–America’s Army–has a number of problems in Vista, most of which are solved with a simple workaround (luckily). Unfortunately, not all games are that easily fixed.

I’m slightly worried that this new laptop won’t do what I was most expecting it to do, which is perform better at gaming than my current laptop. I even plan on ordering it with a 256 MB ATI graphics card, dropping $100 more than if I stuck with the integrated stuff. I want to play games, but it’s looking like that will be a crapshoot for the foreseeable future. But what other choice do I have? I know I want a new laptop. The one I have is getting on in years and really isn’t the best for gaming. But no matter what I do, the new laptop is going to have Vista. I suppose I could get an old copy of XP and install it, but I don’t want to do that just to play games. I suppose I’ll just risk it. After all, just having a dual core laptop with a 256 MB graphics card will be worth it.

Hopefully, Windows and game developers will get on the ball to fix these problems. Vista is supposed to be all about entertainment but it won’t be if people can’t play pre-DX10 games. I’ll keep you updated on this in the months to come, especially once I get my hands on a Vista laptop.
